Vietnam Day 8
Today we started our journey to Pho Quoc an island in the Gulf of Thailand 30 miles from the town of Ha Tien on the mainland. On the way we stopped in the town of Chou Doc to visit the famous Buddha temples located there that are special to many Buddhist in Vietnam. The stop was very short and quick as there are lots of people there praying and its kinda chaotic.
We then continued on to a small town on the Cambodian border which is known for the massacre that happened there in 1978, when the town was attacked by Cambodians and they killed over 4000 people and destroyed the entire village. While there we visited the memorial which is a glass incasement that holds all of the bones and skulls from the people who lost their lives that day.
After leaving there we traveled another 2 hours to the coastal town of Ha Tien. The entire drive today has been really rough as the road we took to get there was terrible and we were passing through rice country and the rice field workers use the road to dry the rice so it makes it hard to pass other cars and scooters. Needless to say it takes FOREVER to get anywhere! I am still absolutely amazed at how these people live, I mean literally they are shacks that can blow over at any minute! I know its probably hard to imagine but I will post pics when I get home so you will see exactly what I mean.
Once we arrived in Ha Tien we quickly checked into a hotel that was 10 bucks a night! Not the greatest but for 10 bucks it worked! Geordy has been suffering from a toothache so we stopped at some pharmacy's looking for meds for him, which by the way is NOT easy to do here!!! They don't have much and half the time don't really know what you need, plus I think all the medicine is expired crap sent from countries with pharmacy regulations. They also have absolutely NO over the counter meds so when you have a toothache and need relief its a little frustrating! So we just had to make do with an ice pack. I brought an entire pharmacy with me but nothing for a toothache.
We took a walk through the local market and checked out the fish market which was pretty cool, it brought back so many memories of my childhood when my mom took me to the fish market in Jeddah, the city we lived in Saudi Arabia. The smell is gross but its fun to look at all the different things they have and most of it is still alive.
After eating dinner we headed back to the hotel to get an early night sleep so we could get up to catch the 8:30 ferry to Pho Quoc.
